What is first notice of loss (FNOL)?

First notice of loss (FNOL) is the initial report to an insurer that a loss has occurred, which opens the claim and starts the claims process.

What a first notice captures

A first notice records the policy, when and where the loss occurred, what happened, who was involved and the damage or injuries. It can arrive by phone, web form or email, from the insured or, especially in commercial lines, through the broker.

Why it matters

What the first notice captures shapes coverage verification, adjuster assignment, the first reserve and how quickly the claimant is contacted. Incomplete or misrouted notices cause delays that are hard to make up later.

Where the work is

Notices vary widely in form and completeness. Someone has to read each one, identify the policy, check coverage at a glance, enter the details in the claims system and route the claim.

Where automation helps

FNOL automation reads notices from every channel, matches them to the policy, flags missing information and routes each claim by type and severity, with a person reviewing anything unusual. Carriers and TPAs often pair it with summaries of the claim file as it grows.
