What is a policy administration system (PAS)?

A policy administration system (PAS) is the core system a carrier or MGA uses to quote, rate, issue, endorse, renew and cancel policies.

What a PAS does

The PAS holds product definitions, rating and underwriting rules and the record of every policy and transaction. It generates policy documents and feeds billing, claims and statutory reporting.

The intake gap

Submissions arrive as emails, PDFs and spreadsheets that people key into the PAS, so submission intake is one of the most common places carriers and MGAs apply AI.

Connecting to a PAS

Modern platforms usually expose APIs, while older and heavily customized ones may need imports or direct database access. Any AI system that feeds a PAS is designed around what the PAS can accept.

Where automation helps

An AI system in front of the PAS should write clean, validated data into it rather than more attachments, so underwriting, issuance and reporting work from the same record.
