What is an agency management system (AMS)?

An agency management system (AMS) is the core software an insurance agency or brokerage uses to manage its clients, policies, service activities, documents and accounting.

What an AMS does

Beyond client and policy records, the AMS produces certificates and forms and runs the agency's accounting, including direct bill and agency bill. Widely used systems include Applied Epic, Vertafore AMS360, HawkSoft and EZLynx.

Why it matters for automation

Almost every agency automation reads from the AMS or writes back to it: policy checking needs the policy record and commission reconciliation the expected commission. Without the write-back, the agency's record is incomplete and everyone has a second place to check.

How systems connect to an AMS

Some systems offer APIs to customers or partners, some support imports and exports and some expose data mainly through reports. The right route depends on the system and the workflow, so confirm it before committing to a build.

Where automation helps

The practical test is whether an automation's results land in the AMS, where account managers already work. A system built around the AMS, rather than beside it, is the one still used after launch.
