What is policy checking in insurance?

Policy checking is the review an agency or carrier performs to confirm that an issued insurance policy matches what was quoted, bound and applied for.

What a policy check compares

A check compares the issued policy with the quote or proposal, binder, application and, on a renewal, the expiring policy. The reviewer works through the declarations, named insureds, limits and deductibles, forms and endorsements with their edition dates and any schedules.

Why agencies do it

Carriers make issuance errors that can leave a client without the cover that was bound. Catching them before delivery protects the client and the agency's errors and omissions record, which is why agency E&O guidance routinely recommends it.

Who does it

An account manager, a dedicated checker or an outsourced service firm usually does the work. Commercial policies take far longer than personal lines because of their many forms and schedules.

Where automation helps

Automated checking compares the documents field by field, listing each discrepancy and its source for a person to judge. It works best when the agency's own checklist defines a discrepancy and accuracy is measured on its policies before anything is cleared without review.
